SOLD ! Congratulations to Deb C. on adding this beautiful saddle to her collection! These photos are of a parade saddle set that I estimate to have been made in the 1930’s. The set consists of a saddle, martingale, bridle, romel reins, and a wool/leather corona pad. The saddle itself is marked H. Beaver, Sanger, CA. The silver, where marked, is marked Fredholm, LA CALIF STERLING. All of the silver is sterling including the ferrules on the romel reins. Fredholm was one of Edward Bohlin’s premier silversmiths. I have been told that Beaver had been a saddlemaker for Olsen Nolte. Click here to download related .pdf file In the 1930’s Edward Bohlin went bankrupt and was unable to pay his employees. At that time, some of his employees contracted their work out to other makers. I have only seen one other saddle with a Fredholm mark and it was auctioned off at the Buffalo Stomp Western Collectibles auction in 1999 where it was the sale topper. The cantle of the saddle has the initials FAR and the breastcollar has the initial R in the center. It would take some more research to find out who this saddle was made for – these large initials were very common on custom Bohlin style saddles in the day. The silver engraving on the cantle and pommel is exquisite. If you look at the photos of the cantle you will see the large engraved flower on the side next to the initials. This same flower is also engraved on each swell cap. The pommel also has over and under silver and the horn top is encased in silver. There is a tremendous amount of silver on this saddle. The tapaderos also have 2 large slotted conchos on the front that you cannot see in the photos. The corona pad is wool and leather and is also in good condition. The bridle has a gold longhorn in the center of the browband. The raised diamonds on each side of the brow and nosebands are very similar to the silver work you would see coming out of the Bohlin Shop as are the bridle and martingale buckles.
